Public Awareness & Education

Stormwater pollution is generated from land surfaces throughout the metropolitan north Georgia area including residential yards, driveways and rooftops; commercial businesses and office parks; manufacturing and industrial facilities; construction sites; schools, hospitals and other institutions; roads and highways; and even parks and golf courses.  Therefore it is important to make individuals, households, businesses and institutions sufficiently aware and concerned about the significance of their actions and the potential for stormwater pollution through public awareness and education.

The Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District is committed to a comprehensive stormwater public awareness and education effort that includes three district elements:

  • Public Awareness Campaign – Mass media campaign including broadcast and cable television, radio, billboards, internet website, press releases, brochures & fact sheets, and utility bill inserts
  • Outreach and Education to Key Target Groups –  Programs to educate target groups that are potential contributors of stormwater and nonpoint source pollution, including materials & brochures, workshops, industry sector-specific training, and speakers bureau
  • Primary and Secondary Education – Specific efforts to educate school-aged children and teenagers through environmental curricula, localized watershed information and special events

As part of its stormwater public awareness and education implementation, the District funds and staffs the Clean Water Campaign, a public education initiative.  The Clean Water Campaign encourages the protection of our water resources by informing residents and businesses on how to reduce the impacts of those activities that lead to nonpoint source pollution and polluted stormwater runoff.  More information about the Clean Water Campaign can be found at www.cleanwatercampaign.com
