Stormwater & Watershed Management

Given that we all live, work and play in a watershed, managing the health of streams, rivers and lakes in the metropolitan north Georgia area is everyone’s responsibility.  Watersheds and rivers don’t necessarily follow jurisdictional boundaries, therefore protecting our water resources requires a regional coordinated approach.

The District’s planning recommendations are contained in the District-wide Watershed Management Plan.  An important component of the Plan is the set of six Model Stormwater Management Ordinances.  Ongoing technical assistance and training efforts are provided by the District for its member local governments.  Finally, the District coordinates a comprehensive regional public awareness and education effort for watershed protection and stormwater which includes the Clean Water Campaign.

The District’s planning efforts are intended to provide a baseline level of stormwater and watershed management across the entire region while at the same time addressing specific watershed areas requiring higher degrees of protection and/or mitigation because of specific water quality issues, source water considerations or general watershed impairments.  The District’s watershed management approach is also designed to incorporate current stormwater efforts currently being undertaken by local governments.
